Democracy Promoting Leader Sujit Choudhry Contributes Expertise to Ukraine’s Constitution Drafting Process

Recognized as a global expert in the field of constitutional law,the University of California Berkeley School of Law I. Michael Heyman Professor of Law, Sujit Choudhry participated with the consortium of field experts and stakeholders to discuss the Ukrainian government’s future democracy.

Specifically, the July 2017 meeting in Kiev, Ukraine, focused on issues surrounding the country’s semi-presidential government and the challenges related to transitioning the country to a more traditional democracy.

Sujit Choudhry acknowledged the honor of participating with the team of constitutional experts and leaders while expressing his concerns over the instabilities with Ukraine’s current form of government.

The government’s problems stem from issues other democracies take for granted, including an ambiguous separation of duties in the executive branch positions between the Prime Minister and the president, with excessive authority being held by the president and problems with election related issues such as weak political parties and issues with the legislature’s electoral system. These factors have combined to created decades of instability within the Ukrainian government.

Think tank experts from Ukraine’s Center of Policy and Legal Reform along with the event’s organizers from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance assisted with promoting the constitution construction process.

Additional contributors to the round table discussions included Sumit Bisarya representing International IDEA and Thomas Sidelius from Dalarna University.

Emphasizing the expansion of global constitution creation efforts, Choudhry raises issues concerning the critical nature of the efforts and participation of experts and researchers in applying evidence-based findings in the process of constitution construction.

Founder and director of the Center for Constitution Transitions Sujit Choudhry has been involved in presenting democracy promoting solutions in 24 countries across the globe.  Additional article on blogs.law.nyu.edu.
