Thor Halvorssen is a tireless fighter for human rights. Halvorssen is the president of the Human Rights Foundation (HRF.) The Human Rights Foundation was created in 2005 and in based in New York. The Human Rights Foundation has a dedicated staff of 12 people who search the globe for instances of government tyranny, corruption and oppression.
The goal of the HRF is to shine a spotlight on tyrants who engage in egregious human rights violations to suppress the opinions and basic rights of opposition groups and those people deemed to be dissidents.
Thor Halvorssen is not your typical human rights advocate. Halvorssen has first-hand experience at dealing with authoritarian governments. He was born and raised in the City of Caracas, Venezuela. Halvorssen’s father was incarcerated and tortured in a Venezuelan prison for opposing a corrupt regime.
His mother was shot during an anti Hugo Chavez protest rally. Thor Halvorssen has also personally victimized by authoritarian regimes. In 2010, he was severely beaten by the authorities in Ho Chi Min City after secretly taping an interview with the leader of a banned Buddhist church who spent 28 years under house arrest.
According to Crunchbase, Thor Halvorssen was released after convincing the authorities that he only went into the church because he wanted to convert to Buddhism. Fortunately, Halvorssen’s cameraman was able to get away the the valuable video card of the interview with the Buddhist leader hidden in a very private place.
Thor Halvorssen has a different temperament than most human rights activists. He doesn’t have the gloomy and dour world-weary attitude that is exhibited by many human rights advocates. He is upbeat. Halvorssen loves people. This is especially true when it comes to liberty-loving dissidents who stand up to tyrannic oppression.
Thor Halvorssen and the Human Rights Foundation have made it their mission to expose despotic rulers around the world. They do not discriminate between political ideologies.
