Jorge Moll and his Research Interest on the Human Brain

Jorge Moll is a neurologist who has carried out many types of research on the human brain. He has come up with many findings which have been confirmed by other neurologists. Together with his colleagues, Jorge has discovered interesting results that relate to the act of giving.

Giving can promote one’s health. When one extends their hand to give, they get a feeling of being relieved from stress. When one gives out, some stress gets out of them creating a healthy life as stress normally leads to lifestyle diseases.

A sense of happiness is experienced when one gives. The result was found out after several people were studied on how they felt after giving. It was actually found that people felt happier when spending on others than when spending on themselves. Thus, those who never give should start practicing the act to increase their chances of being happy.

It was discovered that giving evokes gratitude in the human brain. The recipient feels appreciated while the giver is appreciated by the recipient. The feeling becomes mutual for both parties (Interview). Giving creates some sort of connection between the giver and the given. The closeness between the two became stronger and the act is described to be more of psychological than just a physical act.

Giving is contagious in nature as it motivates those witnessing the acts of giving to practice them at a later time. Out of giving, one can create a social circle that is big depending on how enthusiastic they are in giving.

Jorge Moll currently serves at the D’Or Institute in Rio de Janeiro for Research and Education. He is the Unit Head of Cognitive and Neuroscience. He is affiliated to the Instituto D’Or de Pesquisa e Ensino, Brazil. He has several societal memberships such as Society for Neuroscience, International Neuroethics Society among others.
