Betsy DeVos: A Lifetime of Philanthropy and Giving

Betsy DeVos and her husband, Dick DeVos have both worked in prestigious positions in both the political and business sectors. The couple is known as one of this country’s largest conservative funders of a variety of philanthropies, charities and non-profits. Everything from conservative groups to Christian non-profits to, of course, educational causes, the DeVos family has contributed millions of dollars through their non-profit The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. While the DeVos’s are best known for their political sway and funding, the two know that they are incredibly blessed and giving back to the non-profit sector is a cornerstone of their giving.

While I firmly believe that all types of contributions are important, no matter the size, the DeVos family’s lifetime giving is estimated to be around $1.3 billion and yes, that’s billion, not million. The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation recently came in at number 24 on Forbes’ list of “America’s Top Givers.” The DeVos family’s charitable giving has spanned generations and has now been instilled on the family’s two children, who also regularly contribute to a variety of groups.

Donating to Causes She Believes In

Betsy and Dick DeVos are strong believers in conservative political views as well as passionate about their Christian beliefs. This is strongly reflected in many of the areas that they donate to. For example, Betsy DeVos works closely with the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy. The DeVos Family Foundation recently donated $750,000 to the Institute for Public Policy. They also donate to various organizations that seek to serve and facilitate the views of conservative students at various colleges throughout the country.

Betsy DeVos also helps support two schools in her home of Grand Rapids Michigan. These schools are funded under The Potter’s House, a Christian School. Betsy DeVos provides over $200,000 in funding annually and much of that money goes directly to providing scholarships. These scholarships go to children that typically come from low income families that can not afford to pay the tuition to give their children a quality Christian education. It also goes to much needed programs in the Grand Rapids area surrounding the school, which can be beneficial to at risk youth in the area.

Many of the Christian based groups that Betsy DeVos donates to are also education related. For example, she is an annual supporter of the Grand Rapids Christian School Association and the Ada Christian School Society.

Additionally, the DeVos Family Foundations donates to various colleges throughout the country. This includes a donation to Maryland’s Arts Management school, where there is a building dedicated to the DeVos Family.

Having someone in such a high leadership position in our country be so committed to philanthropy gives me great hope for America’s future.
