The project has come a long way since it began in 2005 after Doug had left his job as an international correspondent for some of the best known news media organizations in the world. On his first bus journey that began the project that has now been ongoing for more than 12 years, Doug Levitt set out with a small amount of money in his pocket and an old laptop he used to record his encounters with fellow bus passengers. Levitt explains his initial journeys by bus could be seen as an early depression period akin to that seen in the U.S. in the early part of the 20th century; however, Levitt reports through his Web series the effects of the years prior to the 2008 economic slowdown are still being felt in non metropolitan areas of the U.S., which are largely ignored by the mainstream news outlets.
